The presentation covered:
What we've been up to the past year.
Our big data audit: Bicyclist Fatalities - Investigating USDOT-Registered Carriers, City of Chicago Contracts, Insurance Providers, and Bike Lane Uprising Reports
A framework to systematically send legal notices to companies reported to Bike Lane Uprising for obstructing bike lanes.
Our USDOT carrier audit is 8 years in the making
The goal of this study is to identify patterns of high-risk carriers and to prevent future crashes and fatalities. We began this audit focused on Illinois-based data and we plan to expand this audit nationally.
What the Project Investigated:
USDOT Carriers: Which Illinois-based carriers (trucks/buses) registered with the Department of Transportation were involved in bike crashes/fatalities?
Which crashes and fatalities involved a carrier also reported to Bike Lane Uprising for obstructing bike lanes
City Contracts: What percentage of these high-risk carriers are vendors for the City of Chicago? How many contracts do they have, what are they for, and their value?
Insurance providers: Who insures these high-risk carriers?
Crash Patterns: Analyzing crash locations, frequency, environmental and behavioral factors of carriers most at risk of being involved in a crash/fatality with a bicyclist.
Key Goals:
Identify predictive patterns of at-risk companies in an effort to identify opportunities to prevent future crashes/fatalities.
Highlight correlations between companies who obstruct bike lanes and crashes.
Develop strategies to prevent future tragedies.
Provide a framework for similar studies in other states as well as a national review.
